This was another good Ruth Ware mystery thriller. I loved the stakes and the running. I feel like I really got to know Jack and Gabe’s live story and am heartbroken over everything. I guessed the person responsible early on as we had a very small cast of characters, but it felt earned and not super obvious.

Zero Days by Ruth Ware

⭐️⭐️ (2/5)

Genre: Thriller

About 355 pages

Jack knows her way around security systems better than the average person. She works with her husband, Gabe, to do pen testing. Gabe runs the cyber security tests while Jack tests the on-site/physical security. After what appears to be a normal test, Jack returns home to find her husband dead. She is obviously distressed and determined to find her husband’s killer. But the only person the police are looking at is her. In an effort to prove her innocence and find her husband’s killer, she goes on the run. Not only does she need to evade the police but she must deal with betrayals as she finds out who she can trust.

Starting positive, Ruth Ware’s writing style never fails to hook me. Her books are always fast-paced and hard to put down. While that was true for this book, Ware made it too easy to find out who was responsible for Gabe’s murder VERY early in this book. I was still engaged through the end since Jack’s journey evading the police did have some exciting scenes. However, this one just missed the mark for me 😕

I enjoyed this gritty thriller.  It's great to see a heroine who is very capable of solving her own problems, including being suspected of the murder of her husband.

Ruth Ware is one of my go-to thriller authors, but this was not among my favorite works of hers. Some interesting and unique elements throughout that made this an overall interesting read, but it was bogged down by overwriting, some overused tropes, and one-dimensional characters. Pacing varies wildly, as there were portions of the first half that had me thinking this would end up a DNF. But when it ramps up, it really really does, and those bits ultimately kept me hooked!

Verdict: Worth a read. Stick with it if you like fast-paced thrillers!
