The translation isn't very good. There are some grammatical mistakes, but more than that, I believe the translation misses a lot of connotation, as well as cultural differences that are not explained.

Well, I have been on a Rulfo kick the past couple months, so I had to read this recent release. First off, many thanks to Deep Vellum, of DFW's hip Deep Ellum neighborhood. They have a bookstore (much more than just their published titles) - and a must visit if you're in the DFW area. And a good cause, with *many* books that are worthy of translation.
Of 210 pp, about 150 is Rulfo's writing. Filled out with a Glossary of Terms, Glossary of Geographic Place, and a Chronology - actually not bad.. But the Intro and Translators Notes by Weatherford are really much appreciated. They lead me to films of Rulfo's books, or films he was involved with - more Rulfo for me to pursue! And also to some Mexican novels from the same period.
The "novel" is @70 pp (really, more of a novella), and worth a read. The rest of the book is filled with bits and pieces, and a letter to his future wife (good enough to make me wish his Collected Letters is going to be translated). Some of them are related to PP, or a story from Plain. But really, for Rulfo junkies only.
Glad I read this - again,, so many thanks to Deep Vellum for publishing. But, for Rulfo completist only. Need an Intro to Rulfo - PP or Plain, of course, a much better place to start.

Otros cuentos de Juan Rulfo. El cuento inicial es muy interesante (El gallo de oro) y fiel al estilo de Rulfo. Recomendado
