The Big Match is an independent reading book for young readers. Jamal's birthday is coming up soon and he would love to have a football match with his friends in the park. However, his dad has two ticket to see a big football game, so Jamal must decide how he wants to spend his birthday.

This book presents an interesting issue to young readers as Jamal must make a difficult decision between two good choices. This is something that readers may be able to relate to and engage with as they read the story. The book features an activity at the back to correctly order the pictures so that they tell the story from the book. In the back of the book, there is also a guide for parents and teachers, giving prompts and questions to enable them to support the child as they read the book.

This book has great representation for young readers. Jamal comes from a biracial family and the illustrations feature a variety of diverse characters. The book also centers on a non-traditional family, as Jamal's parents are separated and he has a step-dad.

Ideal for: young readers aged 6-8 years old.

As a white banded book, this story contains mostly medium and long sentences, requiring a reasonable level of inference and reflection while reading. This book can be read independently, although it is recommended that parents or teachers ask questions and prompt readers to challenge their comprehension.
