I wanted to love this book, really I did. After all the hype it was getting from booktok, my brain just put it on this pedestal and maybe that's where I went wrong.
I want to point out that this could've been an amazing story, but it just felt rushed. First, it's an ista-love trope and I've come to the conclusion that those are my least favorite of tropes. Easton and Maya meet at a bar, she's drunk and dancing on the bar top (slay queen) and one thing leads to another and Easton carries her over his shoulders out of the bar like a sack of potatoes. And suddenly he's head over heels for Maya because "she's not like other girls" (side eyes).
The rest of my review will contain spoilers so if you haven't read this book and my review so far hasn't deterred you. Please stop reading now.
Did that small part give me some butterflies? Yes, it's the little things ladies. HOWEVER, once Easton realizes that she's NOT into hockey players, he's all of a sudden determined to change Maya's mind and convince her to give him a chance. Let's remember he's a player and sleeps around but suddenly he sees Maya once and everything suddenly changes for him. I'm not buying it. It's one of the main reasons why insta-love tropes are my least favorite. It's unrealistic and while I know we sometimes read books to escape reality, I still want it to be believable.
Maya and Easton's love story was anything but that. For me, it just felt like the chase is what was fueling Easton to keep pursuing Maya. Maya wasn't interested in sleeping with him or having a relationship with him and to Easton that just meant "oh, I'm going to convince her that we're gonna be together just not yet." They spoke a solid number of 3 times and he was already saying extremely cringe-worthy things that truly made me laugh out loud. I had to set my book down because I could not believe he was saying these things. Sir, you barely know her. There is absolutely no way you suddenly want to be in a relationship with her.
Their relationship dynamic just frustrated me sometimes because it felt forced. I enjoyed side characters more than I enjoyed reading about their relationship. If that doesn't tell you something, I'm not sure what will.
I really wanted to love this book because it was getting great reviews from booktok, but I really just need to take reviews with a grain of salt and stop putting these books on high pedestals.

This was a predictable new adult book, but predictable can be fun. There was no major conflict just two people falling desperately in love. The writing was decent, and the story had good flow. I liked the characters. Just kinda popcorn for the brain.
