I don't really know how to rate a book like this one. I love Star Wars, and learning about Leia's youth was great, I enjoyed every bit of the it. But it's slow paced, there isn't much action, nor great revelations. There were a few Easter Eggs though, I really loved finding those! So, this wasn't a perfect book, but if I think it on terms of how much I enjoyed it, 4 stars out of 5 seems fair.
I liked knowing more about the Organas, and Alderaan. Like I've already told you before, this is only the second Star Wars novel I've read, so it's an entirely new universe to explore. I believe Claudia Gray did an excellent job portraying young Leia, she's a brave girl, selfless, she worries only for her people and her family, she sometimes is maybe even too careless about her own safety.
This is a YA novel, so there was a tiny bit of teenage romance, but the book was hardly centered on that. Leia is working on her Day of Demand challenges, and once she succeed in those, she'll be truly declared heir to the throne of Alderaan. While she works on her challenges, she'll uncover some secrets that will lead her to the inevitable conclusion that her parents are working on a coalition to oppose Emperor Palpatine. But far from being afraid, she wants in.
I think that's all I can say without giving away some spoilers, but that's enough. If you are a SW fan, and don't mind slow paced stories, I believe you'll enjoy this book. If you're not a SW fan, this is hardly the book to start with, you need a framework to fully understand what's going on, and really enjoy the story.

4.5 stars. Thoughts:
1) Essential reading for any Star Wars fans, particularly Leia fans. Claudia Gray writes Leia so well. I love that, while she is intelligent and strong willed and all those other amazing traits we know and love about her, she still is a teenager. And Claudia Gray handles that amazingly well.
2) Amilyn Holdo is the Luna Lovegood of Star Wars and I love her.
3) The last line 😭😭😭
4) I want to see a tv show or something just about Bail and Breha. They are perfection. ❤️
5) Twovee is my mom 😂

I really loved this book. (I think I've said that about every Claudia Gray Star Wars book so far.) It takes place when Leia is 16 and about to be officially crowned as the future queen of Alderaan. Life goes a bit sideways, however, when she discovers that her parents are involved in organizing a formal rebellion against the Empire. Gray does a great job of following Leia, and her parents Bail and Breha, as they come to terms with the fact that rebelling against the Empire is eventually going to mean leaving their peaceful ways behind and going to war and that Leia, even at her very young age, is going to play a vital role. Between little Leia in the Obi-Wan series and this book, I feel like I know (and love) Leia so much more. This would actually make a great Disney+ series at some point. It is geared toward young adults, but I'd still recommend it to pretty much anyone.
Really enjoyed this one! Got to learn a lot of the rise of the rebellion, and Leia's part in it along with her gaining the title as heir to Alderaan. Yep, if you love Star Wars, I think you should read this.
claudia gray is hands down the best writer of star wars books in the new canon. i've read all of them, and hers stand out for their clarity of character, intelligence in story, and resonance in the larger star wars universe. i found myself wishing she'd written the screenplay for rogue one.
Star Wars!
Another great star wars story! Highly recommend this one! Look forward to the many more stories to come! Read it!

princess 💕💖 panaka going from being emotional about seeing padmé in leia to wanting to report it to palpatine 😒 also the complete contrast in how mon mothma talked to padmé about not condoning violence no matter the opposition to now…quite literally what she was trying to tell them all back then
