I personally was never much interested in Jane Austen novels as I felt it was over hyped. Darcy this, Darcy that etc. When really the real star of the book is the lovely and hilarious Mr. Bennet. But I absolutely adored this book!
“A girl likes to be crossed a little in love now and then.”
While we all know the enemies to lovers story between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy I feel the other characters are more entertaining. I love the sarcastic comments from Mr. Bennet to his wife especially when she gets upset and he is like oh your nerves and I are old friends made me spit out my drink. Their relationship was a reflection of my parents as they were always picking on each other and pushing each other to accomplish tasks. It was unexpected because I assumed this would be a stuffy Victorian novel and that the characters would be very prim and proper. The first page was enlightening as Austen compares the men to “considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters.
The Bennet family has 5 girls all who the mama is ready to get married off and into their respective places in society. Upon the arrival of a new man in town the grapevine is full of gossip. Mrs. Bennet is trying desperately to get her husband to call on the stranger to get in his graces to get one of her daughters in his eye. Elizabeth is her fathers favorite daughter and therefore most similar to him she is outspoken, opinionated, prejudiced and assertive. While Mr. Darcy is prideful, egotistical and concerned with status. These two opposites are constantly thrown into each others path. While the banter ensues so does their feelings. This was a fun story and gave the enemies to lovers trope a fun old timey twist.

Austin may have been the 1st author to give us a sweet rendition of enemies to lovers romance, in which everyone has a HEA. I pick this book up to re-read it about every 3 years and enjoy it just as much every time. Mrs Bennet’s antics crack me up, and I love the banter between Miss Bennet and Mr Darcy. I also LOVE how Darcy steps up and takes care of Elizabeth’s family as a way to prove his love for her. He’s my longest standing book BF.
This is a classic that I feel everyone should read. The writing style is not the easiest to read, but stick with it and the story is beautiful.
