Very difficult to get through. I do believe because someone found the manuscript and decided to publish it, that it was hit or miss. A lot of things were left in the book that should have been removed, while there were things missing. I do believe if the author was alive and able to complete it, it would have been an amazing read.

If you are looking for a book about a lot of misfortunes, this book is the book for you. I will state I am glad I did push through the book, it ended on a mostly well note.

I really enjoy Michael Crichton (mostly) but I should’ve listened to my instincts to skip this. I absolutely despise westerns and books published after an authors death are usually not published for a reason by the author. Obviously with things like wheel of time, it’s different because someone was chosen to finish it. I was hoping that my love of dinosaurs and this being a spiritual predecessor to Jurassic park would help me enjoy this more. But alas no.
This is about two warring palaeontologists traveling to find dinosaur bones. I can totally see why others would like it but I personally do not.

Thoroughly enjoyed this. Apparently I like stories of the American West more than I thought I do. (There's possibly a review I've written somewhere that contradicts this, but never mind).
History, science, people losing their faith in religion, good story telling: why have I not read more Crichton books?

It lacks the Crichtonesque tension, suspense, and detailed scientific exploration. It could have been another Great Train Robbery, his superb historical fiction story of a real train heist. The bones are there, but it appears he never had the chance to build on that skeleton. I need to stop reading books published posthumously.

Fantastical yet believable Wild West story. The basis in real facts helps elevate this book from 'just an adventure' to 'really cool and relatively believable'. Thrilling to the end, genuinely sympathetic protagonist.
