While I did not love this book they way I loved Middlesex, I felt compelled by the characters. I learned interesting things (for example, I now need to read Tolstoy), and I thought a tremendously accurate portrayal of bipolar disorder was a central point of the book. The uncertainty that follows one's college years is also addressed. Very nicely done!!

I love how artfully Eugenides interweaves the lives of his three protagonists, Madeleine, Leonard, and Mitchell. He so aptly portrays that in-between stage you find yourself in once you’re in your 20s. Questioning everything but mostly what you want most out of life with your career and also in relationships are hallmarks struggles of this stage of life.
These characters are so real— unlikable but also too lovable for their own good! I do wish I got more closure on Leonard, I just hope he’s okay. Brace yourself because the chapters are very long, you won’t be able to get through them in one sitting. The long chapters would typically aggravate me but this time it works as it serves as a more natural way to distinguish between phases of these characters’ lives.

Although I was not thrilled with the plot line of the story, it was well-written and had an excellent ending. It is probably for those who might not be able to stomach his other piece "Middlesex".

I didn't think I was going to like this book. It was very dense and descriptive. But I ended up loving it and felt the story was richer for it.
