I've read a lot of negative reviews of this book, and I disagree with them. I love Eugenides' writing style, his characters feel like real people and this story reflects that. Yes: it is a story that focuses on the problems faced by three financially well-to do characters who, it could be argued (with the exception of Leonard Bankhead's mental condition), don't deal with problems of the same magnitude as Eugenides' characters in Middlesex or The Virgin Suicides. But they deal with problems that are big and real to them. And Eugenides does a fantastic job of communicating that. I didn't love these characters, but I don't think I was supposed to. I think I was supposed to see them as the self-involved, twenty-something, recent college graduates that they are. If you can find me someone who at that age and stage of their life who isn't the teeniest bit self involved, I would be absolutely amazed: especially if that person lived in Providence, RI in the early 1980's.

This seems to be a novel that people either love or hate...I really enjoyed this literary novel with insights into real life and real relationships and realistic characters who have plenty of depth, all wrapped up with clever, insightful writing. Read my full review at:

A novel about messy and obnoxious postgrads navigating their love lives and trying to find their way in the world. I didn’t find the characters or plot incredibly compelling, but I loved the writing and Eugenides’ way of describing emotional turbulence and interpersonal conflict.

At first I thought this book was REALLY full of itself. It definitely is (hence the 4 stars not 5 because at times it was annoying and it took me a while to read) but it’s beautiful writing, beautiful detail and at its core a simple love triangle. I’m not one for a love story, and this book is not that. It’s - in my opinion - an expertly crafted tale of finding yourself amongst the chaos of falling in love during early adulthood.
