This was a little painful to read. Maybe it was because I just finished Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, but this was a little too close and a poor reflection. The friendships were hollow and the prose was very simple for a book directed towards middle schoolers.

  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? Yes
  • Loveable characters? Yes
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

Tried too hard to be a follow-up series to Riordan's Percy Jackson (with a hint of Darran Shan's Demonata), and doesn't quite make it.

I like the concept, the writing's pretty decent and I wouldn't mind reading the next book. =)

This was a recommendation from a friend years ago, it has been sitting on my bookshelf for around 2 years. Maybe if I'd read it then I would have liked it, it just seemed a little young for me. The idea that out nightmares could be real and certain children could bring them into reality didn't appeal to me in the way it was written.
