This was really not what I expected, and that was a very pleasant surprise. It has a lot more layers than you'd think and most of them are about horrific things - like abuse, mental illness, neglect and incest. But somehow it isn't depressing, but rather uplifting like a love story. And the ending has a twist I did not see coming!
I'm not even sure what to think, did I fall asleep and miss something? The book had a few pages of making sense and the rest was just plain daft. The ending seriously? I'm left disappointed
This book has been of my favorites by far for the summer. A great summer read that is finally getting the notice it definitely deserves.
Pesante e confusionario. Non mi era proprio piaciuto.
Story takes place in Salem, MA in modern day. Started off slow but definitely got better, the ending was good. Turns out there is a sequel called "Bone Lace."
I think my enjoyment of this book suffered from having read it after I read Shutter Island - there are some similar themes in the plot and Shutter Island pulled them off more successfully. Just didn't quite live up to my expectations.

When I finished I wish I had someone to talk with about it. It totally blew me away. I couldn't believe what I had read!!
Maybe my expectations were too high for this book; I read several good reviews, including at least one that praised the "surprise ending." But nothing about this novel ended up impressing me--not the self-professed unreliable narrator, not the obligatory romance subplot, and definitely not the barely explained, Sixth Sense-wannabe twist at the very end.
Overall it was good. The ending was surprising but I'm struggling with how everything that happened up to that point fit together (considering the new information that was provided in the last pages.) It was a decent read though...good page turner.
