Uno dei fantasy più intriganti ch'io abbia mai letto.

Thank you to LibroFm for the ALC of this book.
This is a fantasy of absolutely epic proportions.  I loved every single bit of it. Xiala is one of my new favorite characters of all time. I was immediately hooked on her storyline and character development.

I also loved Serapio and his story. There is so much going on there, and he is such an interesting character.

The plot of this book really took me by surprise. There was so much going on, from political rivalries, to religious sects, to sirens and villains and cults and everything, but it all flowed together really well.

Roanhorse's writing is delightful and accessible. I absolutely love how well she incorporates so much world-building in without making it feel like exposition drops or overly explanatory writing.

Honestly this book was incredible and I can't wait for the sequel.

This had everything I wanted, violence, adventure, a little mystery, a little romance, betrayal, hope, friendship, and it was epic. This kept me turning the pages wanting more and when I got to the last page I was overjoyed, but cried out that it couldn't end there! A bit of a cliffhanger with our characters who were all fleshed out and was secretly happy with the demise of a side character. I fell in love with the bond between Serapio and Xiala, both outsiders to the main or normal people and bonding over stories, mainly hers of being Teek, but he tells her about his past. The journey they go on together is well written  and in between their journey is the one of Nara who is the sun priest and not only wants peace, but to show the clans that the priests and watchers are still relevant as well as approachable. Things go awry immediately and only goes downhill for Nara until she remembers who she really is. Overall, amazing story and cannot wait for book 2.

Inspired by the civilizations of the Pre-Columbian Americas, this book starts off a new fantasy series by introducing you to a cast of characters dealing with celestial prophecies, political intrigue, and forbidden magic. There are also mermaids and giant crows—what more do you need??

It took me a while to get into this story, but once I was in, y’all, I was hooked! The audiobook has four different narrators, and they each were excellent. I really liked the different POVs, as it allowed the world to be fully fleshed out—these characters don’t all agree with each other. This also came with a pdf file of the character list, which I found very helpful as I was listening.

The world building in this is stunning, but I really fell in love with the characters. I just want them to all get along! There’s nice development too that I’m looking forward to seeing more fleshed out as the series continues. Did I mention book two isn’t out yet? It’s been rough y’all 😩

Thank you to Libro.fm, Simon Audio, and the author for my copy!

Read if you like: high-fantasy, morally gray characters, ancient religions.

CW: violence, abuse, suicide, sexual assault, child abuse, gore.
