3.82 AVERAGE

I enjoyed it but didn't love it.

A page turner

Some parts were a tad over descriptive and slowed the otherwise fast pace, but only so that I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could. Will surely check out other books by Ms. Chance.

This may be the best book I read all summer. It was mysterious, spellbinding, and kept me on the edge of my seat. Wonderful read.

3.6

Very good read

This is the first time I’ve read anything by Ms. Chance, but I will look for more of her books. The plot of this book was engaging, and the writing was good.

I'm not much of a historical fiction reader but I enjoyed this! You could feel the authors passion when reading the book. I think the characters were well fleshed out and the plot was well thought through. It keeps you engaged and wanting to know more through the whole story, a credit to the authors writing skills. I gotta admit, the twists got me! I never really guessed anything in this book as I was reading it. Overall I enjoyed it and highly suggest you read it, especially if historical fiction isn't your typical beat. It was something new for me, a change of scenery, and it came through.

This is actually a 3.5 for me, but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. So much foreshadowing that drove me crazy.

I read this book in two days - I couldn't put it down!

This novel centers around May Kimble who, newly orphaned, is taken in by her Uncle, Aunt, and cousin across the country in San Francisco. Things seem to good to be true and May soon finds out that things are not all as they appear and ere are secrets lurking beneath the surface of her new family.

This novel is historical fiction and my only issues with the novel itself were some of the historical aspects which is why it was four stars, not five.

The writing itself is superb. Chance did a great job of dropping hints at what was coming next that left me wondering, questioning, and hungry for more.

Overall I found this book enjoyable.

I wish there was one change in the first half of the book. There are dropped into the narrative indications that the protagonist, May Kimble, is telling you this part of the story. When these references surfaced they only pulled me out of the story. They also served to release the tension since I was made aware of Miss Kimble making it past this point and able to tell me the story.

Those references go away in the second half of the story but there is no clear indication you have caught up to Miss Kimble so I was never comfortable sliding into the story again.
