Inhoud:
Twee leden van de Amerikaanse luchtmacht zien in een ijsberg de contouren van een schip. Als men dit uiteindelijk meldt, brengt dit een stroom van acties in gang dat niemand voor mogelijk hield.
Dit is het begin van een avontuur voor Dirk Pitt. Hij wordt ingezet om als bodyguard en als piloot te fungeren voor dr. Hunniwell. Samen gaan ze opzoek naar deze mysterieuze schip in de ijsberg. Als ze het schip hebben gevonden, blijkt deze volledig van binnenuit te zijn verbrandt. Dit roept vragen op. Hunniwell geeft aan dat zijn beste vriend op het schip is omgekomen. Als Pitt en Hunniwell doorgaan naar Reykjavik, wordt er een aanslag op hun leven gepleegd waarbij Hunniwell omkomt. Pitt is hier getuigen van. Als er binnen korte tijd nog een aanslag op zijn leven wordt gepleegd weet hij zeker dat hij ergens op is gestuit waar hij beter zijn neus niet in kan steken, maar de dood van een vriend en het feit dat er twee aanslagen werden gepleegd, geven hem de moet om door te gaan. Als Sanddecker dan ook nog aangeeft dat hij meer moet doen dan op zijn werklijst staat, laat Pitt het zich geen tweede keer zeggen en gaat aan de slag.
Uit het onderzoek dat Pitt doet, blijkt dat een onderwatersonde het belangrijkste onderdeel van het spel is, samen met een aantal rijke mannen die de wereld willen bezitten. Maar niets loopt hoe het moet en niets lijkt wat het is. Als het avontuur ook Pitt bijna zijn leven kost is de maat vol en haalt Pitt er uiteindelijk de beste deal van zijn leven uit.

Waardering:
Ik heb gelachen en genoten. De acties zijn als vanouds. Pitt blijft een man met een gebruiksaanwijzing, maar met een hart van goud. Daarnaast is het Cussler die voor de scherpte en de leven in Pitt zorgt. Pitt zorgt voor de charme in het verhaal en geeft er altijd op een onverwachte manier een draai aan het verhaal.
De acties zijn voor mij om te lachen en geven soms het gevoel van emoties.
De 3 sterren zijn omdat het eigenlijk een gewoon simpel verhaal is. Het maakt het rond, maar ondanks alles is het goed te volgen. Het is niet moeilijk, maar wel leuk. Het lijkt op een jongens-jeugd boek. Je geniet ervan, maar er hoeft niet veel bij worden nagedacht.
De 4 sterren krijgt het niet omdat de ontknoping het verhaal niet over de drempel trekt. Het geeft niets extra's, maar zorgt wel voor een verassing.

Cussler ging twee jaar naar de universiteit toen de plicht riep en hij naar Korea ging voor de oorlog. Hij werd uiteindelijk sergeant en vliegtuigtechnicus. Na zijn diensttijd ging hij in de reclame werken. Eerst als copywriter en later als creatieve directeur. Voor het schrijven van diverse reclames voor tv en radio heeft Cussler een prijs op Cannes gewonnen.
In 1965 begon Cussler te schrijven.
Tevens is hij oprichter van NUMA een instelling die zich bezig houdt met maritieme en marine geschiedenis en het vinden van spullen van historische waarden zodat ze tentoongesteld kunnen worden bij non-profit orgnisaties.

This is my least favorite novel of Cussler's so far. It's definitely a product of it's time, and not at all in a flattering way. The book started out really well with it's introduction of the mystery ship trapped in the ice, then slowly fizzled out from there. Towards the middle, I found myself rolling my eyes over Pitt's behavior and his "disguise." I felt it was in really poor taste, even for "back then." Also, the antagonist's plot and reasoning behind it felt a bit half-baked. Finally, the ending was downright silly. I would only mention this one to someone who is looking to round out the series. There are other, better Cussler adventures to recommend.
It started out as a decent Cussler book. Writing was sub-par but the story was entertaining. 2/3 of the way through it got a bit macabre and the story went downhill. With 10 pages to go, the author threw in a twist that did not impact the plot too much but came out of left field and was simply strange.
I have to say...I'm a little mystified (and embarrased) by my younger self. I used to love these Dirk Pitt novels. In my defense, maybe I read the later novels and not these awful first books. They are so misogynistic and cliched, I'm having trouble believing I was ever OK with the writing. Maybe because I'm re-listening to them on audio, and hearing it out loud is a whole different experience.
I love Clive Cussler. It's been awhile since I've read him, and most of these I read early in high school, after finishing the Tom Clancy and Michael Crichton novels. I was just going to rate a lot of these offhand, but I decided that I'll (slowly) re-read them in order to be more accurate.
Iceberg is the first hint at what is to come, in terms of consistently raising the stakes, with the next book, Raise the Titanic!--over the top, crazy hijinks with our hero on a worldwide scale. From the frozen North Atlantic to Disneyland, Dirk Pitt takes us with him on a wild, unstoppable, relentless push toward justice.

3.5 stars, rounded up for online ratings. If there’s something I love in a book, it’s a great prologue. This wasn’t it. It took a couple of chapters for the book to start actually making sense or bringing in action and adventure. But when Clive Cussler gets going, he BRINGS IT. The plot was incredible, and while it all comes back to this mystery boat that’s been put inside an iceberg, that really is not the jist of it, literally ‘just the tip of the iceberg’. But, I hate spoilers so you won’t get any from me!
Usually, I’m really character driven. I like to feel linked to the main characters. But for what it’s worth. I hate Dirk Pitt. He is sexist and completely and utterly rude. He spent most of this book parading as a gay man, while sexually objectifying women, but acting gay to the extreme by acting ‘camp’ and wearing flamboyant outfit choices. In today’s society, how many homosexual men actually act or dress like this? Not the majority that’s for sure. But then, is it the character or is it the author himself?
However, this is a minor flaw in comparison to the plot itself, which was really interesting and kept me hooked throughout. I will continue to read this series over the course of the year, but if this machoism gets worse or doesn’t go away over the years the books are written, then I’m not sure I can continue to support this author.

This is the exact paperback that I read back in my youth. I don't remember what I paid for it.
Hmmm, come to think about it, I think I stole it from my future ex-husband who was in the navy at that time.
Anyway, this was one of my favorites even though I remember some of the 'scientific' conversations tended to confuse me. Mostly I skimmed over those parts.
