Lots to think about. So nice to read an academic text that doesn’t feel like deep frying my brain.

the first anne carson text that I did NOT like. I am tired of reading endless meditations on the impossibility of desire. these meditations keep us alive, keep us safe from the danger of annihilation that the journey from desire to love entails. keep us safe, and also allow us to think we are doing something dangerous just by thinking desire. it's all loopy and self-preservative. I don't want it. the real danger is that love is real; in getting there, the self will auto-destruct. I do not want to save myself from it-- because I can't.

two stars

although at first interesting became increasingly repetitive ( sought to say the same thing over and over again with nothing added besides a handful of quotations. ) many attempts at depth seemed superficial because of how far of a stretch they were.
i will say i enjoyed the collection of quotes provided , as well as the gist of the essay. if only it did not drag on for as long as it did

Loved the way she logically laid out her essay. She made it easy to follow, but the journey from unknown to known was still very enticing.

just breathtaking! Carson's work on yearning, obsession, and desire is just so precise and beautiful. I loved what she wrote about the paradox of desire and getting what is desired thus erasing that desire, the attention she pays to Greek poetry in order to make that point is amazing.
