4.5? so close to 5 stars. i REALLY REALLY liked this book and can't wait to read the next one. the world building was great, loved the idea of the different colored londons and their varying degrees of magic/warmth. kell was a great protagonist, not perfect but close enough that i really routed for him. i loved how he really cared for prince rhy and clearly viewed him like a brother and would (and did) do anything to save him. but lila was clearly my fave. a tomboy who dreams of being a pirate, who is completely self-sufficient and has some magic in her even though she comes from dreary grey london without magic. i wonder if she will end up somehow being antari also, and that's why she could travel between worlds.
so many questions though! the end when kell is fighting athos was a tad bit anti-climatic. and i'm still confused...athos and kell were fighting in white london, and kell was losing b/c he wasn't letting the stone totally take him over the way athos was, and then...athos created a snake but somehow seemed to lose power over it, and the snake killed him and then when it came for kell, kell killed it? also, he just turned astrid to stone and then crushed her? also when he put the 2 pieces of the black stone together, he said the power that surged through him felt "right" unlike when it was one piece and it was clearly dark magic. is that b/c the stone was so happy to be one piece again, or was it somehow not nefarious anymore? either way, putting the stone in holland's hand (who was still alive) and sending him to black london was obvs a disaster.
was obvs V sad when lila walked away (without looking back!) after their precious kiss. i guess it's too early for them to totally get together, but i would have been all about that.

This was a good read! It wasn't quite what I expected after all the hype I have seen (and after loving The Near Witch the way I did years ago), but the world was vibrant and complex, and I enjoyed all the characters throughout. It doesn't shy away from the darker things (badum tss), but the book didn't feel incredibly dark or heavy at all--rather more like Lila's exciting adventure after all.
I feel like I just binged a season of an action-packed fantasy show that delivered on every level. This was cinematic - I truly felt like I was watching a great story right in my head, and I can fully see some kind of adaptation in the future.
The characters were fun, the worldbuilding was awesome, and the plot was just a really solid fantasy story. While the plot twists never really blew my mind, they all made perfect sense in the story as a whole, and I’m excited to see where this goes in the next two books!
