If you’ve already started this series you know why it’s great. Everything I loved from The Fifth Season is expanded upon here, and new elements are just as excellent and appreciated. I’m picking up book three literally right now!

This book explores some amazing themes and is beautifully written. I love the characters and their dynamics and the commentary on love, parenthood and growing up in an oppressive world. However, the slow pace did make it harder to get through and enjoy it. I’m glad I read it, and I will be reading the final book in the trilogy, but it wasn’t the most enjoyable of reads.

Essun is settling into Castrima, but she hasn't forgotten about Nassun. Essun is working with Alabaster to try and save the world from the Fifth Season.

Nassun is working on learning to control her orogeny and magic. Nassun is making some difficult and hard to understand decisions.

The book is a pretty classic middle of a series book. There is a lot going on, but not much happening. The book is building up for book 3 and I can't wait to see the conclusion.

This book was such a great follow up to the epic Fifth Season.

I’m not going to say much in this review for fear of spoilers, but just know that the narrative gets more and more interesting and you get both answers to questions you didn’t realize you had...and even more questions.

The characters continue to be standouts, with Essun’s story continuing to be outstanding, as well as the new POVs of Schaffa and Nassun. The way these characters’ stories are woven is nothing short of stellar.

I did feel like this book did suffer from some slow pacing, and the action wasn’t as compelling as the first book, but the mysteries contained here are more than enough to compensate.

Overall, I’m so excited to go into reading the finale and can’t wait to see how it ends!
