Spellbinding middle of this trilogy, with mysteries, intrigue, power, and wonder.

Immersive & intricate storytelling, brilliant writing, all in the epic world she has crafted.

the first book in the trilogy was absolutely amazing; the plot and characters were intriguing and different but I’m honestly surprised that this book didn’t give me a reading slump... I felt like it was dragging a bit and the plot wasn’t interesting at all, I won’t waste my time reading the next book either.

4, maybe 4.5 stars. The writing is excellent, and Jemisin has a clear understanding of the world and its characters, but there are definitely the signs of the Middle Book here, elements of rearranging the chessboard rather than establishing the rules or finishing the game. That said, the new plot line with Nassun, the daughter, is really well-done, showing the grasp of personalities that really makes Jemisin a special author. Needless to say, I think the final book in the trilogy will be highly awaited.

I definitely enjoyed The Fifth Season a bit more than this one but it was still so good! I loved reading about Nassun's journey and how things rolled out with her from book 1. I honestly love Hoa so much and I can't wait to find out some more about him! Essun is a very likeable but also disliked character back and forth for me but I can see the development coming and I feel like we get more of her throughout! Ready for book 3 now :)
