Here’s another book I read based solely on hype. Facebook and bookstagram kept raving about it so I had to check it out. I wish I could find the original post that made me buy it because the review was awesome.

I enjoyed this book even though it was not at all what I was expecting. I went into it with no expectations, having bought it a few weeks ago and then completely forgotten everything I read about it. But I know myself and I don’t buy books unless they sound incredible. I’m a big fan of the library and Kindle Unlimited, so this was unusual behavior. It was so out there it took me a while to get into it. Not to mention I struggled to picture some of the events of the story because the plot is so wild. At the end of the day, it was a fun and fast paced read that kept my attention and kept me guessing.

A Light Most Hateful begins mundanely with the main character, Olivia, discussing how in love she is with her best friend, Sunflower. Olivia is new to town, having run away from home three years prior and was welcomed to Chapel Hill by Sunflower. She’s reminiscing while working her boring job at the concession stand of a drive-in movie theater. A homeless woman emerges from the darkness outside the concession stand and a group of high school boys begins attacking her. Olivia rushes to her aid when the woman suddenly turns in a half snake half woman and eats one of the boys.

Things keep getting crazier from there as Olivia flees the drive-in and makes her way through town. The townspeople have turned into mindless zombies, attacking anyone who touches them. She carefully runs through Chapel Hill, heading to Lookout Point to find Sunflower and save her from the insanity. From there circumstances continue to get more and more bananas.

If you like weird fiction, body horror, or T. Kingfisher, this book is probably for you. You won’t be able to guess what’s happening next. I wish I could share my reading notes with y’all without this post getting too long. I made several predictions and only one was right, not to mention having no idea what was going to happen next.

Very interesting concept. Got a little bored about halfway through after the first big reveal, but got hooked again at the end. I enjoyed it.

Gonna pick it up when I have more time - the story is dense and good, I just need a lot of time for it.
