“Somebody, your father or mine, should have told us that not many people have ever died of love. But multitudes have perished, and are perishing every hour—and in the oddest places!—for the lack of it.”

Is it sacrilege not to adore this book? Will I go to literature hell for not being a James Baldwin Stan?

Some things I liked about this book: the writing style, the way it gets so intense in the second half, the way Baldwin writes from an unlikable white man's pov superbly.

Things I didn't like: how hard it is to get into, how stilted and unnatural most of the conversations seem, the way it made me feel not smart enough to read this.

In the end it's a classic and I can see why to some extent,  but I won't be screaming about it from the rooftops.

An excellent regretful retrospective of inner turmoil that remains compelling and contemporary, yet also a product of its time and the biases of that time. Great as a classic and as a way to investigate how perceptions of self and of others (including outdated ones) can be impactful and impossible to wholly reconcile.
