In “This Rough Beast,” with his clear and expressive writing style, Ken Kuhlken takes Otis Otterbach, his best friend Casey, and the reader into the turbulent 1960s, touching on folk music, rock’n’roll, communal living, the notorious Manson family, the Vietnam war, political activists, and dangerous situations. This second volume in Kuhlken’s “For America” series leaves behind some of the childhood joy of Volume One’s, “Supermen,” and explores the emotions of the more “grown-up” world that besets Otis, his friends, and the reader. I’m looking forward to reading Volume Three, “The Gas Crisis.”
