Dense, grimy, and incredibly imaginative. Quite unlike anything I've read before.

A bit too much description for my liking. But very original and very good story and characters.

Honestly was not expecting to absolutely fall in love with this book. A truly beautifully written beginning to a trilogy I can’t wait to continue. The language and China Mielville’s writing is some of the best I’ve read. You think the book is going to turn out a certain way and then around 200 pages in the curveballs come at you. Couldn’t recommend this book more to fantasy lovers.

While I do see how some people can enjoy it; For me going through it was torture, and I abandoned it 5-6 chapters in.

This book has a wonderful atmosphere. As you read it you can almost feel the fog and darkness, and see a world of blacks and browns. You feel yourself thinking about finding a doorway to duck into. It's complex and rich, and I didn't want it to end.

Really good book. Great world building. Book took an odd turn about halfway through, almost feeling like it completely switches genres. The first half would make an excellent thriller if it were the full book, and the back half would make a good action adventure if it were the whole book. Having both holds it back a little. Also im all for grimdark but some choices at the end had me scratching my head. Almost felt like shit being dark just to be dark. All that being said very memorable book which I thoroughly enjoyed.
(Also can authors please stop springing undeserved truth bombs on us in the last 30 pages of 600+ page books thanks)
