This was the first time I've read this book in about 15 years, but reading it again just took me completely back. The story was very different to what I remembered but it was still very enjoyable.

4.5 stars - outstandingly nostalgic fantasy adventure starring an adorable cast of characters.

I remember picking up this book off the shelf of my junior high library at a time in my life where I thought I might be outgrowing animal fantasy. The 272 pages of this book proved that I will shamelessly never outgrow animal fantasy, and picking it up years later the song remains the same. The world is delightfully well-woven from the very first page, with the lore and culture of the bats incredibly interesting, the characters strong and delightful to read about, and the journey gripping. While the plot follows a relatively predictable path, it is by no means a detriment to the story. Kenneth Oppel's attention to detail is outstanding as well, with several minor details like the lack of colour descriptions and usage of bat echolocation being very cool to learn about. Excited to make a return to the rest of the series and pick up where I had left off.

The first book I ever read. It was so good that I forced myself to learn reading faster and it had a huge impact on my life. I wouldn't be studying what I study now if I hadn't read Silverwing.

I don't like some of the tropes here, and the main character bat is just terrible at the beginning and through the middle, too. He doesn't really have much of an arc to get better, he just kind of decides not to be as hateful. The factions of different kinds of animals seemed very one dimensional, and things just kind of happen.
