Great writing and world building. I enjoyed this dystopian future and the satire. The characters were also really good and can't wait to read the next book.

Fantastic and mesmerizing bizarro-world filled with detail and minutia that bring it zinging to life. Fforde is a genius, without question. I get perhaps half of his literary references, and consider myself extremely lucky when I catch one. I'm sure a scholar (or maybe my mom) would get even more from his work. Can't wait for the rest of this series.

I can definitely see the appeal here, but it didn’t quite draw me in.

I liked the premise but just couldn’t get into it.

I don't know how to classify this book. I mean, I guess it's science fiction or maybe fantasy but it doesn't really read like either genre. The world building took a while for me to get a grasp on and then it makes one extremely uncomfortable. And don't expect to feel good when you reach the end.

That said, it's compelling and really different, and despite the over-the-top premise that you would expect from Fforde, the main characters are convincing and the relationship between the narrator and his father is especially interesting.
