Runyan has dedicated her writing to sharing stories of powerful women doing incredible things during times when they were considered too frail or even incompetent. The heart she weaves into Ruby, the courage crafted to reflect that of the women of inspiration drew me into this story, and a good amount of romance solidified this as an incredible read. Brilliant storytelling. Again.
I enjoyed the book.
I enjoyed learning about a part of history i was not aware of. It has made me curious to learn more about these brave women.

This book was okay - it did not blow me away. This was one of the books that had been pitched for a book club idea, but I just could not connect with Ruby. Her entire character was to sculpted and just did not feel genuine. The remainder of the book was alright, but definitely not on my "will read again" list.
This is a cool bit of history! The book is a historical fiction romance set in World War I. The protagonist Ruby is a telephone operator that goes and serves overseas operating the telephone lines.
The book has a sweet romance. I thought it was a bit obvious what would happen, but it was fun learning all the details.
The pacing was a little slow at first; what drew me in at the beginning was the tragic moments. I nearly cried several time during this book.
This book did a really good job of developing the characters, and showing a comprehensive snapshot of this period of history.
It was historically interesting because at the time the suffragettes were campaigning to get the vote. The story of this group of women dubbed Hello Girls is relevant to women’s rights because the army did not officially recognize them as veterans until 1979. Until that point they were viewed as citizens contracted with the army because the wording of the official army language specified ‘man’ This meant even though they were sworn in and wore uniforms they were unable to receive medical care or benefits.

I love a good historical fiction story and I was immediately drawn in to Ruby’s story. I also love a good romance and the historical and romance parts of the story were the perfect mix. You could tell the author really did research into the historical aspect of the story, making it so believable and easy to read. I couldn’t put this one down!
As my second audio book and for someone not that into audio conceptually, I really enjoyed this one. It made me consider more audiobooks. The writing is great and the story was relatable while introducing really interesting historical moments.
I loved this book! It told of the unsung heroines of WWI! The writing was fantastic, character development fantastic--I tore through this book in just a couple of days!
What an original and great book! Had no idea there were women who did this during the war. Great read!
