Another excellent book by Liane Moriarty! It kept me guessing and on my toes until the end.

This book started out slow for me and about 40% of the way through, I wasn’t sure if I’d finish it. I’m glad I did. The various lives of the various characters began to weave together in interesting ways and the ending, which I had feared would be dark, was uplifting and inspiring.

Interesting concept. Lots of characters and it made it difficult to keep track of their story lines sometimes. I didn’t love the focus of the book being death.

This is the first book I've read by Liane Moriarty, and the thing that struck me the most is the vibrant, rich, and alive way that she writes her diverse cast of characters. I really felt like I was seeing through a window into the lives of real people rather than reading a fictional story. It was particularly good given it's set in Australia and it's rare I get to read stories set in the country I live in.

The plot felt a bit loose and slow, but I didn't mind too much given that it was enjoyable simply existing in the world the author had woven.

I'm not sure how I feel about the ending, I think perhaps (minor/vague spoilers)
it left me feeling like it had been too rapidly and neatly resolved after a lot of pages of not much plot progress

However I didn't necessarily dislike it.

I can certainly see myself picking up another Liane Moriarty book in the future.

This book is full of heavy subject matter that is dealt with in an insensitive and casual way. There is hardly a content warning to be found that does not apply here.

There is a huge number of characters, each of which gets introduced to the reader in very little time, only to disappear and reappear in choppy, random, little  chapters. The characters are unlikeable... Apart from the Death Lady! The chapters from her point of view saved the book. Half of them are dreary and awful, too, but there are a few beautiful, reflective words told in her whimsical voice.

The writing is lengthy and meandering. The book is far too long and the middle part was largely unreadable. The premise has been done in better ways (see: The Measure). However, the final part of the book was written in a beautiful and moving way. The narrative voice of the Death Lady is charming, especially the descriptions of celebrities!

Despite considering to DNF or return it, I made it through the book as quickly as possible so it could be over. I hated how the sensitive subject matter was handled and I will most definitely not repeat the entire experience. However, there were a select few beautiful pieces of writing in there that raise it to 2.75 stars.
