If you were given a prediction for your death, would it change anything about the way you lived? A group of passengers on a flight in Australia find themselves asking this question, when a woman on their flight walks around handing out predictions for their age and cause of death. (There are bad flights, and then there’s this!)

Here One Moment follows the passengers on this fated flight, as well as the woman handing out these predictions, who will get nicknamed “the death lady”. The book alternates through chapters of the passengers and Cherry.

The premise was really interesting, but I found the pacing to be inconsistent. I found the passengers’ chapters to be more compelling throughout the flight and in the months that followed, and Cherry’s chapters dragged on a little bit more. I liked that she was an older woman who had lived quite a life, with a unique background and story. With this being a Liane Moriarty novel, I expected things to come together a bit differently.

What an excellent read! There was so much depth and honest emotion in it. It was such an accurate portrayal of grief and loss, and how it (or the potential of it) affects your everyday life. At first this book had SO many characters and it was a bit hard to follow--but by a few chapters in I was able to keep track of everyone and really got attached to all the characters. It was hard to read at some parts--in our culture death is something so rarely discussed or thought about. Moriarty did a fantastic job with this novel, and the ending was perfect and satisfying. I'll be thinking about this one for awhile!

"Everyone loves a particular version of you and when that person is gone that version goest with them."

Here One Moment is the quickest long read of my summer. Chapters are relatively short, and the characters are many. A woman gets on a plane and goes down the rows handing out cause and age of death predictions like packets of peanuts: efficiently, impersonally. How disturbing! How does she know?! Why would she even share this if she did?! Even the baby?!?!
I made the mistake of starting this book at night before bed and then couldn't stop thinking about it. Would I want to know? Absolutely not. And if a stranger predicted the death of my baby, I might have chosen violence. This novel wraps each story neatly and satisfyingly though, with the perfect amount of emotion. I really enjoyed Allegra and Ethan's respective stories the most. Cherry is the center of the universe here with the only first-person POV, but I think her story slows progression at times, particularly during her party years. Overall this is a reflective, enjoyable emotional read reminiscent of last year's The Measure by Nikki Erlick.

What would you do if you were told how you would die and at what age? This books explores that theme.

I loved this fast-paced, compulsory read. If you need a book yo get you out of a reading slump — this one is it! The mystery, tension, humor, characters, and pace kept me invested all the way through. It had a little bit of everything but mostly centered around death and grief (which are usually deterrents for me when it comes to books so me loving this one says a lot)!

If you have loved Moriarty’s books in the past you won’t be disappointed with this new one. I think those that enjoyed The Measure by Nikki Elrick will also like this one (this was done much better in my opinion with a similar-ish premise). The pacing and tension of the familial mystery also reminded me of Happiness Falls by Angie Kim which I also throughly flew through and enjoyed.
