I read this book with my 5th grade gifted class. We have all LOVED the book and have great, insightful discussions on the basis that deafness is not an “illness” This book opened a doorway for my students (and myself to become more interested in sign language.
As an adult, I never thought I’d enjoy reading this pre-teen novel the way I did. It was historical, controversial, mysterious, and thrilling!

I haven't read a middle grade novel in years, but this one is exceptional! It addresses so many needed issues, while remaining accurate to history. Excellent writing! Highly recommend!

HOLY COW this got very dark and very stressful. I was emotional with relief at the end. It was good but the middle was definitely hard to read because it was so intense! It feels like an important story and the end is very moving.
