This book was absolutely incredible to read. The story was really engaging and kept me longing to read more. Parts of the book pushed me to tears, other parts gave me butterflies. I feel sad that the book is over, but I'm grateful to hear there are more books following the story. I would 100% recommend this book to anyone with an interest in black history.

I enjoyed this book so much more than I expected. It dealt with some seriously heavy topics that I have never read about like this before. This is one of the few books that has produced a visceral reaction from me. I had so many moments of stress, worry and outright fear for some of the characters. My heart hurt during the books few truly violent scenes and the main character's naivete made me want to shake her. That was my biggest issue with the book, but it didn't detract from my enjoyment. Watching her grow and learn and truly come in to her own power was wonderful and Mattie is a total scene stealer. I loved her and her family and how much she loved Lisbeth. The ending was not what I wanted but it was as it should have been in the confines of the story and not all tales end wrapped in a pretty bow and that made it more real and wonderful for me.
