For such a short book this spans many years, but given the shortness there are a lot of jumps in time and a lot of glossing over events. It could have been improved by a bit of fleshing out.
The narration for this was excellent, with Bahni Turpin nailing the southern accents.

I enjoyed this book so much more than I expected. It dealt with some seriously heavy topics that I have never read about like this before. This is one of the few books that has produced a visceral reaction from me. I had so many moments of stress, worry and outright fear for some of the characters. My heart hurt during the books few truly violent scenes and the main character's naivete made me want to shake her. That was my biggest issue with the book, but it didn't detract from my enjoyment. Watching her grow and learn and truly come in to her own power was wonderful and Mattie is a total scene stealer. I loved her and her family and how much she loved Lisbeth. The ending was not what I wanted but it was as it should have been in the confines of the story and not all tales end wrapped in a pretty bow and that made it more real and wonderful for me.
