Lots of talk about big waves for a book set on the Long Island Sound lol. But while I liked the vibes of this one, I didn't feel like any of the characters were fully fleshed out- even in the final chapters I struggled to tell Evelyn and Mina apart.

No one talks about the summer when three teenagers drowned in Sand Dollar Cove, but for Mina Zanetti and Evelyn Mackenzie, it's the origin of their problems. The two girls are tied together by what happened, a fact that's clear when the events continue to haunt them—literally—years later. Evelyn's father was accused of committing the murder, and she's spent her life with the town whispering at her back, even though he was never convicted. Mina's family trade is speaking with the dead, and ever since she and Evelyn made a deal with a spirit, Mina's power has been iffy at best. The only mark of that night? A sand dollar emblazoned on her wrist.

I found this story to be lovely and haunting. Mina and Evelyn are fantastic characters, and the queer aspect is a bonus, but not a massive part of the story. There's a lot of water/ocean-centric magic, so if that's your jam, this is for you.

This book was, well, a mess. The first third of it was OK but I had invested too much time in it to DNF when it veered toward being simple and uninteresting. The characters were unlikable and hard to relate to because of the way they're written; it was near impossible to feel any sympathy for them. I didn't understand the point of identifying the supporting characters (such as "white girl", Mexican American, Japanese American), and doing so along with creating the characters to be bisexual lent no value to the story. It felt like a forced attempt at being inclusive. The only thing that saved this book from a one star rating was the surprise "who dunit" at the end.
