It is fun to thumb through the book and see all of Schuman's photographs. In many cases, I wanted to know where the photos were taken and hoped for a little more back story on the photos.
I'm a fan of Scott Schuman's wonderful street fashion photography blog, The Sartorialist, so I was delighted to discover that he has two books as well. Every bit as excellent as his blog; highly recommended.
Really fun street fashion photos, inspiring and joy to see people put care and expression into how they dress.
This is a very cool book. It's almost totally pictures. It's based on a blog of the same name. The author (a fashion photographer) has filled the book with pictures of people he encounters in everday life who are really well dressed (in the sense of being unique and really put together in an interesting way) or who exude personal style. The clothes are not just what would be considered the most fashionable, but rather the emphasis is on how the individual has combined things in ways that are really almost artistic. He has included men as well as women and features people of all ages from the U.S. and international locations. A few celebrities are included. He sometimes has multiple pictures of the same person. As someone who admires people who are able to dress creatively, I found this book to be really inspirational.
I kind-of surprised myself with my enjoyment of this book. It is true eye-candy. I am not a "fashion" person and I'm not even really a "photography" person, but this book really spoke to me. Every page was filled with people that would catch your eye on the street. I agree with another review that it doesn't portray the normal everyday folk - but so what? I loved looking at almost every person in this book.
Scott is best at noticing and capturing stylish men. as a woman, I found only four inspiring pics in the whole chunky little book.
Fantastic street-style photographer—and he's a native Hoosier at that.

This is a book of photographs of beautifully and uniquely dressed men and women on the streets of NY, Paris, Milan, etc. I'm obsessed with this book. I swear, every time I look at it, I see something I haven't seen before. Stunning.
Scott Schuman is The Sartorialist. Not a serial killer, although wouldn't that be an excellent serial killer? No, The Sartorialist is a blogger - and before you roll your eyes, dude, Scott Shuman is a blogger who doesn't write very much, and who takes extremely fine pictures.
He takes pictures of people who know how to dress themselves. Aging Italian playboys. Tiny, youthful French fashion editors. Artists, housepainters, Carolina Herrera, Kanye West. He has a weakness for beautifully tailored suits, women in oversized coats, skinny jeans, and Carine Roitfeld. There are lots of women in tights, and he has a Northern Italian's appreciation for color, by which I mean, in this book, if it's not black, it's probably navy blue.
I envy his access, his equipment, his frequent flyer miles, and his extremely discerning eye. And the ultimate take-home message from this book: if you know how to wear a scarf, that's half the battle.
