Interesting, but a bit rambling.

While this is a history of the birth and evolution of NecroSearch International (described as "a small, eclectic group of scientists and law enforcement personnel, active and retired, who volunteer their services to help locate the clandestine graves of murder victims and recover the remains and evidence to assist with the apprehension and conviction of the killers"), this is also the in-depth story of a number of cases that they were involved in, covering not just their involvement but all the other aspects of the case as well. Two of them I'd actually heard about before on Forensic Files, which I've watched quite a bit of.

I enjoyed the narrator and felt he did a good job with his narration.

This was a great book about forensics. I had no idea the types of testing that is able to be done. Amazing.

I can’t recommend this more for any true crime junkie out there. Fantastic read.

Came for the true crime/cold case - stayed for the contribution to one of Russia's greatest mysteries

This was an interesting docu-novel about the development of Necrosearch, an organization to assist in the search and recovery of bodies in clandestine graves, remote areas, and bodies of water. It wasn't riveting, but it was a compelling anthology of various cases of murder and hidden bodies and how they were recovered. I would recommend if you're into this sort of thing. This edition provided updates to the end of each chapter and Epilogue for events that occurred since the last edition.

Full disclosure: I read this specifically because Georgia mentioned it on My Favorite Murder. The work these people are doing is truly unbelievable. It also makes me eternally grateful that I will never have to boil a human head as part of my job.

NecroSearch specializes in locating clandestine graves using limited primary source material. This book follows their journey discovering the remains of several women (eventually ending with a section on the Romanovs which I didn't expect!), and more importantly, bringing peace to the families who never knew what happened to their loved ones.

Each discovery is broken up into a few parts: the subject and challenges of location, the recovery, the trial of the murderer, and the aftermath. Each case is different, but the investigators are always deeply invested in their work—in one instance, even sleeping next to the remains of one woman they needed more time to recover so that her bones would not be disturbed during the night.

Incredibly insightful, stunning, and inspiring, this is a must-read for anyone interested in forensics or True Crime. SSDGM.
