A good read, I cant say I found any of the characters likeable, normally a fun cast of characters but I found this one rather tragic. A sombre read and little of the humour from previous Maigret books. I have rated it 3, a good read but not one I'd remember.

I'm scared to read The Carter of La Providence now because these canal-based mysteries don't seem to be working for me. This one was far better than Lock 14, with a fairly intriguing egotistical and dastardly villain, but then any chance for a logical dramatic conclusion just slips through Simenon's hands like so much canal water in the last 30 pages.

I read this book so many years ago, a good chance to reread it.
