One of the 'City Watch' novels of the Discworld series, the story once again shows off Commander Vimes' determination to uphold justice, this time in the face of racism, conspiracy, foreign policy, and demonic possession. As has become the norm for the City Watch stories, we get to shift points of view from one Watch officer to another as the plot unfolds. Mystery, philosophy, psychology and terrific humor all ridealong with the good police folk, helping to ensure that this makes for a gripping read.

Commander Vimes has to defuse the latest upswelling in the troll-dwarf rivalry - and a lot of it is figuring out what's going on. This is Pratchett as his peak. It's complex, funny, and spins a great adventure at the same time.

This might not be the place to start into Pratchett's work, as it's better if you already know the characters and background of Discworld.

If I rate this against the other books in the Watch series it doesn't rank particularly highly, but the fact remains that it was still better and more enjoyable than most books out there.
