It's all mysterious on purpose while being pretty cool.

I mean, it was annoying to go on this entire journey and have like, 0 functional plot or answers. In my opinion.
I imagine this was quite the epic, and people were eagerly awaiting who was the real Superman and what the reveal was, and which issue and I guess once I figured out it wasn't going to happen, it was like 'oh okay this is lame'
Steel was fine. His little gang war was very much like the Black Lightning TV show for me, and then Myriad and Lex and I haven't read enough DC comics from this era to know why Lex Luthor has his own private mutated Supergirl thing or what's going on with that.

I have a lot of questions. I guess I need to find the next collected volume to wrap up the story here. But it took me almost a month to slog through this and while there was some emotional impact to bits of it here and there, it just wasn't... it was just less.

On the up sides of it, there was some good emotional impact of the people in Clark's life reacting to having lost him, and what that means and what that looks like. Not a lot, but a little bit. The weird aliens that eat spinal fluid could have been interesting. If they didn't seem like a random afterthought.
Superboy was... odd. But he wasn't a detractor to the story it would have been really interesting to see him interact with the Kents or for them to somehow approach him learning something.
Tldr: I was left cold, but I can see what it might have been like to maybe been part of it back in the day and why it might have been a heck of a ride.

With unique, distinctive art for each of the 4 Supermen and interesting stories for each. In hindsight, it was obvious that the real Superman would return, so these four were nothing more than pretenders to the title. That being said, the reign of each was far too short and the audience for them could have built longer than it did.
A great transition to the return of superman though.

This was so much better than Funeral for a Friend. This was a lot more fast paced and made you actually want to keep reading. I'm bitter they teased Batman but didn't deliver, though.

Not as good as the first of the series, Death of Superman, but fun to see how the replacement Supermen came to be. Metropolis faces a Superman-leadership vacuum and these guys try to fill it, but poorly.

More going on than the previous volumes - for good or ill. Not keen on the weird Alien-knock off baddies that appear in there. I do like the multiple Supermen and their stories.

I read the entirety of this in order to clear up a single plot point in a fic, and I think that's frankly heroic of me. Pluses: Kon appears! He's an absolute little shit. The slow reveal of new Supermen is fun and keeps us guessing. John Henry Irons (Steel) could have a great storyline if the DC writers weren't really concerned with the Plight Of Urban Youth.
Minuses: I simply don't care about visor Superman or robot Superman. Kon is sexist in a deeply 90s way, which gets boring after a while. Aforementioned Plight of Urban Youth. Lex Luthor is here and has a beard?

Better than the last volume. I just have one question: Where is my Superman/Clark Kent?

This entry had some great moments, but was not as entertaining as the first volume or the second. By the end, you're ready for Superman to return. I'm glad to get the full Death and Return going this route, but it starts to get a bit daunting, chasing the return of our hero and having to settle for pseudo-supes in their various forms, but I am anxious for the conclusion.
