This is my new favourite Superman comic. It's a perfect combination of faithful to the mythology and inventive where it has to modernise.
For example, Clark reporting in Africa as a sort of rite-of-passage before deciding to become Superman? GENIUS. I also love the characterisation of Jonathan Kent, exploring what it would actually mean to raise someone who is essentially a god, and the responsibility that would entail.
Also, I know Mark Waid has claimed to have not taken any inspiration from Smallville, but I can't help but feel he wouldn't have gone the way he did with the Clark and Lex relationship if Smallville hadn't come out just a couple years prior.
I also found everything related to Jor-El and Lara to be incredibly moving, and I now consider it the definitive origin when it comes to Clark's birth parents.
I will definitely be rereading and would HIGHLY recommend this to anyone wanting to read a Superman comic for the first time, or even someone who doesn't like the character, because I think it would change their mind.

Screw the Man of Steel movie. This is what they should've based Superman's origin story movie on. A good amount of hope and realism with a dash of personal risk to Clark Kent.

It's fine, I just got bored with it. Doesn't really compare to All Seasons.

It's funny, but while - like, I'm sure, most people out there - I may know (of) the origin of the Man of Steel, I've never actually seeing it written down anywhere.

Thinking about it, I think that knowledge comes from the Christopher Reeve Superman films, and the more recent TV series Smallville.

That TV series was still running when this graphic novel series was released.

This goes back to Superman's earliest days in Metropolis, with a brief flash-back to his high school Smallville days, to present a new take on the origin of the character - Jimmy Olsen? Check. Ma and Pa Kent? Check. Perry White? Check. Lois Lane? Check. Lex Luthor? Also check!

As such, I found this an interesting take on the character, with some dynamic action sequences and some stand-out visuals (Clark Kent soaring over a herd of stampeding Zebra's, for instance).

That last panel was beautiful and something that I never knew needed from a Superman book.
