Rereading this a decade later and in a language I’m not 100% comfortable reading has helped me focus on the plot instead of the vibes, and wow I understand why so many people were up in arms. It’s a fun, ridiculous dark romance, but it’s marketed as young adult, and it’s concerning to think about all the young girls who were exposed to such poor communication at a formative age and have it painted as a great love story. Overall, it’s not a compelling book to me now, though I still had fun at times.

I also watched the movie today, and it was fascinating to see how they moved things around to make it a more evenly paced film.

Wanted a more light-hearted quick read between more dense books and honestly liked it more than I thought I would. I only watched all the movies for the first time last month so this was a ride.
Jacob is barely in it, Edward is gross and manipulative, Bella is absolutely useless and super cringe to read through her perspective. But it was fun and fast and served it’s purpose as good junk food guilty pleasure of a book.
The last 3rd was really not great with the sudden threat, it didn’t flow with the rest, it felt rushed and unnecessary, I just wanted a shitty romance, I didn’t want half-assed drama.
Don’t regret reading it, I overall enjoyed it, but I won’t be reading it again nor will I be reading the others in the series.

I don’t understand why people continue to love this series/franchise when there is obviously so much wrong with it. Stephanie Meyer, first of all, portrays an emotionally and mentally abusive relationship as “romantic” and, second of all, appropriated the entire Quileute culture without doing her research or supporting said indigenous people so she could claim “diversity”.
