Mixed Feelings: Poems and Stories by Avan Jogia

I started reading the book in 2019? Stopped because tbh not really a poetry person. Finishing the book more recently definitely impact how I felt. Also, I found it confusing the way the writing was shared on an editing level. I wasn't always sure which piece was by Avan and which was by the author who began their piece. I think many may find comfort and solidarity with this collection. It just wasn't for me and that's ok.

I had a difficult time with this material - mainly due to the subject being outside of my lived experience, and trying to understand the struggles mixed folks face daily. It's completely different than my own worldview for better or worse. I felt a massive disconnect throughout the book; maybe because I'm not a poetry person, though I am trying to read it more.

entertaining book, helped me see the pains and struggles of a person of color (various backgrounds) and i felt a great deal of empathy growing within me. not to say i know what it's like, but to say i understand it more.

I really enjoyed this book! I really resonated with a lot of these stories, but I also got a new perspective on the experiences of mixed race people. I also really appreciated the mix of illustrations, art, photos, and words.

I am not the target demographic for this book but I do have mixed race siblings (one of which I bought this book for) and friends. I also have empathy for my fellow humans regardless of their race, religion, sex or sexual orientation. Unfortunately the world we live in far too often marginalizes people for no other reason than the ones listed above therefore I find reading collective experiences of people suffering and overcoming hardships on a day to day basis that they shouldn't be facing an important education.
