I really love this world that the author created with the witches and familiars! I adored Jamie and Nick together. They really did work well. I love reading about the other pairs and I want to reread the other books.

I agree with a couple of the other reviews I read and in our world today, it hits too close to home. I also read to escape real life and normally I wouldn't read anything close to real life but this author writes so well. I just hope to believe in the good.

One of the things that linger after reading each of these books is: you can't hate what you know. Each of them begins with at least one of the MCs deeply distrusting the other, but then, slowly, while they get to know each other, they learn that nothing/nobody is always black and white, and that no matter how justified is your distrust, you need to accept that people are more than witches/familiars (gender, race, sexual orientation, religion, choose your own).

I love this story, and I love how there is a major arc encompassing all the books, and now, I need to decide if I'll wait for the next ones come as audiobook, or if I'll get the ebooks. For now, I'll begin with Spectre :P

Another fantastic urban steampunk fantasy from Hawk

The Hexworld series is like no other I've read and it manages to combine a number of tropes into a seamless experience.

In this, Rook's brother Nick, a horse familiar, finds his witch in MWP copper Jamie, who lost a leg during a disastrous campaign in Cuba.

Part historical, part urban fantasy, total Steampunk, Jordan L Hawk creates a truly unique New York setting in which dangerous men plot behind the scenes.

This one was fairly creepy, had a seriously unexpected final twist and was utterly brilliant. I can't say more than that really!

WELL, "Hexslayer" is now my favourite of the Hexworld series. For now.
I'm not sure what Jordan did to make this one stand out for me from the rest, but I'm pretty sure it was partly due to absolutely wonderful main characters and a much more fast-paced and natural writing style.
I definitely wanted to know about Nick's story when I got to meet him previously but boy, did he irritate me. So imagine the surprise when I found myself reading this book halfway into the night, unable to stop.
I loved Nick here but I especially loved Jamie and together they made me laugh and blush and root for them with my whole heart. They were literally made for one another and I loved how both of them managed to meet in a middle ground and finally comprehend and appreciate and trust one another.
The story was compelling and heartbreaking and made me worry and ache for the fate of the ferals Nick is so adamant about protecting.
And now I'm very very curious to read the fourth, and final, book. I'm sure Isaac and Bill's story will destroy me.

Loved it

I absolutely adore this series and I am so excited that Nick got his own story! It felt true to his character and was a lovely edition to one of my favorite series.

There’s going to be more, right??

Ahh, I am so happy to get Nick’s story. He’s a very complex character and I felt like this volume really explored more about what makes a familiar a familiar and differences between them and “normal” humans.

I really like Jamie and think he’s an excellent balance for Nick. I enjoyed how they help each other grow and affect their perspective of the world. Nick’s anger sometimes made him almost cruel, but he also worked towards a lot of good throughout.

What an exciting climax at the end too!! Didn’t want to put the book down as different pieces came to light and the scope of the conspiracy behind the theirarchy came together. I really hope there’s more in this time period and I WANT ISAAC TO GET HIS HAPPY ENDING GDI! I feel like Hawk has set it up that Quigley is Isaac’s Witch (can familiars have more than one Witch?) and I want to see that story~!

Reread April 15, 2020: I love Nick and Jamie. They’re definitely my favorite pairing I think and I love the mystery. I still want to scream
when Hurley burns Wyatt’s letter
. High stakes and good tension to the mystery!

I thought because I hated a character in all the other books, I would hate the book. On the contrary, I loved it. Finally figured out why Nick was such an ass. Nick and Jamie just worked, contrary to what everyone else (including me) expected.
