A rather simplistic, but interesting, view of the life of Jewish children that were sent to Sweden just as WWII was breaking out. The author was good at bringing out the emotions of a 12 year old girl (the story is from her perspective, but she came to Sweden with her sister, leaving her parents behind in Vienna) and I felt myself drawn into her life.

A moving story of settling into a new country
Read this in parallel to the Swedish original as part of my own language learning - a wonderfully moving story of two Jewish girls moving to the Gothenburg archipelago (where I also live!) to escape Vienna in WW2. You really feel for Steffi as she navigates her new life, whilst missing her old one - and as she gets closer to her foster parents, learning their own story. Anyone who enjoyed Michelle Magorian will enjoy this too. Would definitely recommend reading in the original Swedish if at all possible - the translation sometimes felt a little more twee

Not quite what I expected when I started this, but still quite interesting. A good look at what some of the children had to deal with during the war when they were evacuated to live with strangers.
This one took it from a different view, in that the children were going to Sweden from Germany, not being sent to the US or Canada from England, etc. This one was about the Jewish children being gotten out before the war.
All in all a good book, although I felt it ended a bit abruptly. Probably explained by the fact there are three more books, but I had to poke around before I realized that. :) Unfortunately this appears to be the only one translated into English.
In a lot of ways the story was very similar to the series by Kit Pearson Guests of War which was about a couple of English children sent to Canada during the war. But the scenario is very similar, as are many of the childrens' reactions.
