Nothing Burns as Bright as You by Ashley Woodfolk

I think this novel-in-verse will appeal to young adults. It's really more of a 270 page love poem about one girls love/infatuation with her best friend and of a burning first queer love. The love and longing is well developed but there is little to the plot, setting, or other characters so it feels less novel-in-verse and more poetry.

3.5 stars - one thing Ashley Woodfolk is gonna do is yank emotion out of you. This being in verse was a choice, especially bcs it was in first and second person, and in the beginning, I couldn't really get in the story bcs the timeline confused me. This impacts how the story resonates (imo) but it does not take away from the author's beautiful writing and beautiful metaphors. Also, the relationship/friendship is kinda toxic... but maybe that was the intention bcs of the possible eventual character development. I do recommend this book and can't wait for another Ashley Woodfolk book

Novels in verse always carry something extra special with them. I loved this. It follows two girls as they build a friendship, that is often chaotic and at times toxic, through first love that feels like forever love and everything that may mean as they grow. The social commentary in the contrast with their families lives peaked my interest, but what kept me the most engaged is the disruptive (as well as peaceful) ways that these two girls loved.

this is suchhh an underrated, hidden gem! the writing is beautiful, and the audiobook narrator does a phenomenal job. this is one of those books that breaks your heart and puts it back together again. also recommend reading the author's note at the end as well.

Amazing writing however it has a few big plot holes.
