..."As far as you're concerned, I am who I am, eh?" It was hard to name the tone in Jinshi's voice: he sounded thrilled and forlorn at the same time.

my most favorite volume from this series so far!!

not only did it have some of my favorite mysteries from the entire story overall (ex: the mystery of the two young women who were stuck in their rooms and could only do embroidery), but we also learned more about anshi, the empress dowager, and the past emperor himself.

also!! the hunt took place near the end!!

a lot of people would compliment it bc there's some sexual undertones in this scene, but honestly i loved how it all just alluded to how much importance maomao has for the palace. as much as she wishes to live in peace and be left alone, it's only her that is ever able to see the secrets that lie behind a lot of conspiracies.

i think her being seen as a valuable tool is one thing, but i can't help thinking how jinshi sees her as much more-someone who makes him feel like he could be free to be himself, no matter his position.
