I have to be honest I was intrigued by the blurb but when reading I really struggled to get through it. The story itself is cleverly thought out and well written but for me it was all a bit too slow and it just didn't have enough pace behind it to have me really turning the pages.
I'll admit I was tempted often to skip to end to find out what happens but I persevered with the novel. Just for a comparison a book normally takes me no longer than 2 days to read, this one took me 3 weeks.
I'm not sure if it was the historical side of things and the language used that made it harder for me to connect to it all but being honest The Wicked Cometh just wasn't for me.
If you enjoy the historical genre then I'm quite sure this a book that would appeal to you as like I said at the beginning it is well worded, just not my cup of tea.

This is a historical fiction mystery, with a f/f romance, which sounded perfect on paper, but the execution just didn't quite do it for me. We follow Hester, as she finds herself tagged up in the mystery surrounding a spate of missing personas in London's East End during the Victorian Era. Although she technically is not from London, she's surprisingly naive for a girl who was mostly brought up there, and in relative poverty, so much so that I just as not buying it. There was a lot of swooning, and not very many surprises considering that this is a mystery novel. It was okay, but I don't see myself remembering this book at the end of the year.

Enjoyable, exciting, dark, stormy, sexy etc etc.
My trope peeve- characters who profess their love and then shag at the eleventh hour of peril.
Ending was far FAR far far far fetched. Protagonist sees drowned lover, MONTHS later it turns out protagonist could not actually tell her true love's face apart from a random relative and they're reunited on a street corner when old mrs splatchett the washerwoman overhears at the peasants market that lady moodycow is actually alive.
Four stars for good writing, gay agenda, and October vibes.

A historical fiction novel that is both gorgeous and gritty, The Wicked Cometh is a really fantastic book. The plot takes a backseat to the relationship that develops between two women, one from a wealthy family and one from a poor background, and the book investigates class and inequality at the time. Highly recommended for anyone looking for sapphic historical fiction!

The Wicked Cometh by Laura Carlin is a middle of the fence story for me.
It is set against the backdrop of the slums of London in 1831 and features Hester White born the educated daughter of a parson she has fallen on hard times after the passing of her parents.
Taken in by the gardener and his wife Hester soon Finds herself far far down with the dregs of society Using an opportunity of chance Hester finds herself in service to the Brocks using a falsehood to secure an improvement in her station, Hester finds a growing friendship with the enigmatic Rebecca Brock her new teacher.
But there are secrets afoot and it's not long before Hester and Rebecca are caught in a web of intrigue and danger.
So with this, I really enjoyed the beginning and I also found the end to be very exciting.
However, the middle of "The Wicked Cometh" I struggled with, I found this to be a trifle long winded and I did find myself skimming quite frequently.
This is the main reason I have rated this down slightly.
Despite that, there is still plenty here to keep the attention and I must admit that I did become misled in regards to plot direction so bravo to the author for that.
I also loved the uniqueness of this tale in regards to the relationship between Rebekah and Hester.
And also the underlying mystery here, that managed to keep this afloat.
And also found the language used here was of a very lyrical nature.
This was also a nice touch.
So that's about it, there were positives and negatives to this story for me.
It was an alright read but didn't blow me away.
NetGalley provided me with an ARC of "The Wicked Cometh" by Laura Carlin of which I have reviewed voluntary.

I’d heard only good things about The Wicked Cometh, and then when I saw the beautiful cover I knew this was a book I needed! And it did not disappoint. This is a beautifully written mystery novel set in grimy Dickensian 1830s London. It delves into a world of murder and grave robbing so rife in that era while also being a love story for two lost soles. The descriptions are so detailed you can’t help but be in that time period. Although I could have done without some of the really gruesome descriptions if I’m honest! I found my self second guessing everything and everyone apart from Hester and Rebekah - two brilliant heroines that I rooted for from page one. Here’s hoping book two is on its way soon...
