I loved how it intertwined so deeply with the city of Savannah. It was fun to be familiar with the locations.

“She’s thrown graveyard dirt on some of the best houses in Savannah, God bless her!” - Jim Williams
Beautiful, unconventional, witty and engaging - overall a very entertaining read!

It took me entirely too long to finish this book! I knew nothing about this one when I picked it up. At no point did I want to DNF it, so I cant explain why it took me twice as long to read as other books.
The reviews I read in the 3-4 stars range mostly reflected what I thought about this book:
-- it was a slog
-- it was a lot of introductions to characters that didn't really... do anything
-- a lot of irrelevant gossip from, by, and about the old Savannah crowd
-- the writing was good, but not transcendent in any way
-- how was it such a solid bestseller for so long?
And my own take:
-- when you introduce me to a drag queen in an 80s book, you had BETTER make her a significant presence. Alas, we did not get our fair serving of The Lady Chablis, who was one of my favorite parts of this.

This was such an interesting slice of life + true crime book. Berendt's writing style was whimsical and very interesting to me. The pacing was off at times, and the true crime part of the book didn't kick off until about the halfway point of the book. If this wasn't recommended to me by a close friend, I think I may have DNF'd, but I am glad that I stuck it out all the way through.
