I figured out the villain early on but still enjoyed the adventure.
Serafina and the Twisted Staff picks up just a few short weeks after the events of Serafina and the Dark Cloak. Serafina and Braedon Vanderbilt have defeated the man in the dark cloak and things seem to be getting back to normal at Biltmore. Serafina is no longer hiding from the other residents of the estate and she knows who and what her mother is. It is almost Christmas and Biltmore is busy with lots of guests and holiday preparations. One of the guests claims to be a police detective investigating the disappearance of Mr. Thorne (the man in the dark cloak). He keeps questioning Serafina and Braedon and the other guests. Lady Rowena has also come to stay and seems to have attached herself to Braedon. On top of everything else there is a man in the forest who seems to have magical powers. He can control animals and cast spells on people. He seems to fit the description of the man of the forest from local legends and he seems to be coming after Serafina and Braedon.
This second book in the Serafina series is just as dark and creepy as the first. I might have even liked it better. I was again suspicious of the person who turned out to be the bad guy from the beginning, but it seemed less obvious than Mr. Thorne from the first book. I thought the powers of the man of the forest were truly terrifying and horrifying. I also really enjoyed Serafina's growth in this book. Not only does she come to terms with her parentage and what that means, but she also seems to be fitting into the human world a bit more. I think this is a great series for middle grade readers who like to read scary stories (and for adults who enjoy that type of thing too!).
I received this book from Netgalley.

A fun YA fantasy set in the real life Biltmore Estate.
Serafina and Braeden are back for another supernatural adventure at the Biltmore Estate. Starts slowly. Beatty would do well to see how J.K. Rowling referred to what happened in the previous HP books. He needs to see how to blend it into the current storyline better. Anyway, someone wants to destroy the Biltmore and seems to be able to control or possess animals. All animals in the forest surrounding Biltmore are fleeing, even Serafina's family. Serafina, who is not completely at home in either place, decides to save Biltmore.
This time a twisted staff serves as the conduit for the magic.
