The story is intriguing and the author is good. The book dragged a bit for me. Those last 100 pages though, were pretty amazing. I wish the whole book had flowed like that.
I liked this book even more than the first. Really enjoyed the NC references, since my family lives there and we've been to the area. Next time, we will have to tour Biltmore. I listened to the audio version and I would highly recommend it due to the accents.
Now I loved the first book in this series and I kind of went crazy at the library and got all three of the books before I even opened the first one. So, one could say I was definitely hoping (and really praying) that the next two books didn't sucks ass. The first one didn't but you never know when the second book comes out.
I feel like Serafina is like a weird nancy drew (weird because of the whole lion thing) because once again there's a new evil in town and who is the only one to defeat it? Her. Always her.
Now aside from all of that I kind of felt bad for her because she was kind of living two different lives and none of them truly accepted her either. It's kind of like there is no best of both worlds. But then again I didn't really see that happening after I read about her catching a rat with her bare hands.. yeah, no. Hard pass on that.
Other than that gross fact about Serafina - I love her friendship with Braeden. No matter what I can always count on them being together and being super fucking awesome. I love these two. I ship these two.
I don't even know what else to talk about - I just hope that the next book is even better. I can't wait to see how this all ends.

Beatty is an excellent writer of suspense. He gives clues that are really not explicit and so even though you have an idea of the surprises in store, you're never 100% sure until the revelation comes. It's perfect. Also, the folksy, magic of the mountains genre is lacking in coverage and he nails it so well.

This is a fabulous series! The recommended ages are from 9-12, but I think anyone over age nine would enjoy this. There is something for everyone in this. If you love animals, fantasy, shape shifters, friendship, a hint of romance, good role models, evil villains, magic, a mysterious house with lots of hidden passages, mystery, historical fiction, and especially great story telling, this is for you! I listened to the audiobook version of this book and loved it. The narrator really made the characters and this story come alive. Looking forward to the third book!
I liked this one even more than the first. Because the world was already built in my mind, it was easier to get sucked into the story and become invested in the characters. It's a very quick read (larger font, and intended for younger readers) and full of action. Being a North Carolinian, the Biltmore Estate was also a fun aspect of the book for me.
Friends, I wish I could come up with the words to describe how wonderful this book is. Sometimes you get to a sequel and it does not live up to the first. This is wildly untrue of this book. I didn’t know it possible, but this was even better than the first. I highly recommend this series to middle grade readers who are not afraid of suspense and love a good fantasy.
