I then read/listened to The Reader by Bernhard Schlink. I LOVED this book. I can’t fully explain why but I do. I borrowed this from a friend so I have added it to my growing list of “books already read that must be purchasedâ€. I loved how the author humanized these characters. I was very uncomfortable with the relationship at the start but you grow to appreciate the characters and what they went through in their various life stages.

This may be an acclaimed work, but at the end of the day it is about a Nazi child-groomer. You can't escape that as it's a fact. It does make this a challenging read because of the subject matter and you can't escape that. I do think that there are interesting things to explore, especially around the culpability and responsibility of those people who worked for the Nazi's in concentration camps. Yet, I just felt uneasy reading this. Maybe that's the point?
