I seem to be on a bit of a roll with books this week. The Reader is another concise but wonderfully written novel, incisive and unforgiving in equal measures. A tricky subject matter, it deals with the guilt and blame felt in the German youth of a generation past the Second World War, through the relationship of a young teenager with an older woman. While this general social commentary is fascinating, the characterisation, particularly of the lead male, is brilliant. Schlink eloquently portrays an adult in large amounts of conflict over his relationship, not only with Hanna, but the jarring he feels at interacting with his own generation, and the children that follow him.
The action, when it happens, comes thick and fast, making The Reader truly gripping. It's an excellent read, and the film isn't too bad either. Make sure you read the book first though!

Je me suis plongée dedans sans rien en attendre et il a réussi à me fasciner de bout en bout.
À l'entrée dans la première partie, j'ai eu peur de tomber dans la sublimation d'une relation abusive mais il a totalement réussi à me berner.
La plume est à mon sens brut et cohérente avec l'intrigue établie. Le sujet traité l'est fait avec une telle finesse et une crée une empathie prégnante envers le personnage principal bien que le contexte présenté soit glauque et ambigu.
Il ne faut rien dire de l'intrigue pour s'immerger en son coeur et être conquis.e
