3.5

Patternmaster is Octavia E. Butler's first book, I think it's amazing how she wrote Patternmaster and from it she was able to "go backwards" and create Clay's Ark, Mind of My Mind, and Wildseed. Out of the series, Patternmaster is my least favorite and it's also my lowest rated Octavia E. Butler title.

I really enjoyed the final action sequence and that's why I bumped up my rating this time around.

The first time I read this book (which was last year in 2022) I gave it 3 stars, this time
I'm giving this a 3.5 out of 5 stars.

After Clay’s Ark, I had no idea where this series would end up. I loved this book though - great writing, characters you get quickly invested in, masterful world-building as always. I wish this had been just a touch longer to see what happens
as Teray takes control of the Pattern
, but that’s just because I like a fleshed out conclusion.

Overall series review: Uneven, but enjoyable. Wild Seed and Patternmaster were by far the best, with Clay’s Ark and Mind of my Mind following. It took a while for everything to come together but it did, and did very well. I wonder what Doro and Anwanyu would have thought about how things ended up.
